Cyprus News | Pressure on Petros Clerides South’s Attorney General

sign-push-the-door-mdCyprus News | Pressure on Petros Clerides South’s Attorney General

In what would seem to be a run-of-the-mill event, Petros Clerides, the south’s Attorney General, is being accused of using his position to squash his lawyer son’s drink driving conviction. The event which took place in 2011 involved Christodoulos Clerides driving over the alcohol limit in a car that had not passed an MOT and for which he did not have up-to-date road tax.

What is most important is the fact that the story is being revived at a time when the south is being accused of all sorts of wrong doings which are alleged to have taken place during Christofias’ presidency. The feeling is that if the Attorney General, at the top of the legal chain, is seen to be acting against the spirit of the law then what hope is there for the legal system. There was also a suggestion the President Anastasiades is seeking to to clean out from government those who are seen as being unhelpful for Cyprus’ international image.

Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but is Petros Clerides on the way out?
